Bank Employee Resigns after Being Denied Leave Due to Mother’s Illness

A woman employee resigned from her job after being denied leave while her mother was seriously ill. The incident took place at a private bank in India.

According to the employee, her mother was unwell at home, and she was compelled to apply for leave from work. However, when the office refused to approve her leave, she decided to quit her job.

The employee alleged that when she requested leave, her manager told her that if her mother was sick, she should place her in a medical facility or a shelter home and come to the office. She shared this experience in a post on the social media platform Reddit.

The manager’s comment sparked widespread outrage, with many people questioning the harsh corporate work culture and the lack of work-life balance.

In her post, the employee stated that her mother became critically ill due to incorrect medication, prompting her to request a few days off. Despite being denied leave, she chose to stay by her mother’s side instead of going to the office. She also mentioned that despite working at the company for a long time, the refusal to grant leave forced her to choose resignation.

She further wrote that she was unsure what the “right” response should be in such a workplace situation, which is why she shared her experience online. She asked social media users what they would have done if they were in her position.

The post quickly went viral on Reddit. One user commented that she should have asked for the suggestion in writing to see how quickly the manager’s tone would change. Another user wrote that the comment was not just insensitive but cruel, adding that legal protection should exist against such inhumane exploitation. Another commenter said that while the situation was unfortunate, she should not have resigned and instead waited for the company to terminate her.

Many such opinions and suggestions emerged in the comment section.
